New York: G. Schirmer, (1941). Early printing. Paperback. Quarto. 9 x 12" single sheet laid into a printed folio, entitled Samuel Barber Four Songs for Voice and Piano, as issued. Near fine in original printed wrappers. The score is signed: "Samuel Barber / March '78." Item #32370
The text of the song is taken from a lyric by Agee that was first published in his first book, Permit Me Voyage, 1934, two years before the publication of Barber's signature work, Adagio for Strings. The author and composer became friends after Barber famously set Agee's Knoxville: Summer of 1915 to music in 1948.
