At the time of publication, Nuttall was a fellow at the American Philosophical Society and of the Academy of Natural Sciences (Philadelphia). The preface politely asks understanding for the omittance of the lower orders of Cryptogamia as well as a skim use of nomenclature in order to offer a "portable manual for the student." New names and genera proposed by the author are noted with an asterix while obscure species receive a plus sign. Some 834 species are discussed in this two-volumes-in-one book.
